Compte-rendu de lecture de l'ouvrage de Luca Greco, Dans les coulisses du genre : la fabrique de soi chez les Drag Kings, Paris, Editions Lambert Lucas

Abstract : Behind the Scenes of the genre: the self-factory at the Drag Kings, Editions Lambert Lucas, Limoges. This new book by Luca Greco is interested in transcribing and explaining what the different levels, contexts, possible performances of the genre cover. Here he focuses on the construction and presentation of a "male" self, based on the results of a field survey conducted in Brussels between 2008 and 2013 in the Drag Kings workshops. A veritable synthesis carried out in support of a field survey, this well-documented book is based on a number of references and a vast and complex knowledge of the field and reflection on the subject, which is also reflected in the writing, both dense and Luca Greco. The author is careful to clarify from the first introductory page that it is indeed "a point of view", which is that of "an ethnographer" "sociolinguist" who works "in gender studies" and for whom language, in all its aspects (voices, words, gestures, post ures, clothing, looks) is at the centre of "the fulfillment of gender." This reading grid, specific to the author, remains open to other possibilities. Thus, although his point of view is that of a linguist, we see from the outset that language is not reduced here to the verb alone, but is enriched by other perspectives "anthropological, sociological, theatrical" (and more), which give a vision multidimensional language, as something dynamic, complex, embodied by the body and its staging as much as by words and their staging. The book suggests that, just as there is a verbal syntax, there is at the same time a syntax of the bodies, and their decorations. In other words, a language emerges, specific to the affirmation of bodies, with its own characteristics depending on the context. A first part offers a historical and epistemological synthesis of research on and around this subject; it relies mainly on Anglo-Saxon research, but also on Italian authors. The emergence of the Drags Kings (DK) in the 1990s is approached from the perspective of historical linearity. Luca Greco strives to define and above all, to trace the history and evolution of certain words (camp, queer, butch, Drag king, etc.). He thus manages to account for all the problems associated with his central field (the DK), which he reads in capillarity (without puns), which leads him to trace the history of the notions and the links that organize them, what one could call, at least temporarily, "genre games"-that these correspond to choices of artistic experiments, personal (performances), such as Drag Kinging, or an obligatory journey linked to a lived experience, a feeling different in relation to gender assignment related to birth sex. From a theoretical point of view, the history of cross-dressing, first presented as based on an external approach, is addressed here through its differences with the notion of disorder, which refers to an internal approach to the relationship to gender, and receives descriptions psychiatric or even pathological: the Drag is presented as a game, a practice-theatrical too, which is not limited to travesty alone, but accumulates other signs and put into action and in motion of cross-dressing (mustaches, walking, talking, interact, sing...). The proposed history of the Ftomale (Female to Male) to the FtoUnknown (From Woman to Unknown) shows the multiplication of possible categories in the diversification of identities, in nuances. An infinite number of possible incarnations of the other genre is thus shown as likely to happen, and to varying degrees-to the extent that the other genre cannot, either, receive a linear or smooth reading or existence.
