Des usines aux pavillons : banalisation et fragmentation d'un quartier (post)industriel en quête de projet (Terrenoire, St-Etienne)

Abstract : The purpose of this communication is to examine the restructuring of an early industrialised territory that faced socioeconomic changes and induced processes of (de)valorisation. The district of Terrenoire, independent until its merge with the City of St-Étienne in 1969, now experiences a peculiar situation. It has seen several industrial restructurings until the late 1990s when it was partially reconverted into a commercial zone and a residential area, while retaining the strong legacy of an urban fabric shaped by the industry even barely understandable nowadays. The (relatively) successful conversion of Terrenoire into a residential area cannot conceal the degree of deep fragmentation of the neighbourhood. Between the utopia of an industrial countryside and the banalisation of an urban periphery, the district needs a project that can give a renewed meaning to the territory. Our analysis, based on the collection of the socio-spatial representations of some Terrenoire inhabitants, shows the existence of divergent collective memories that contribute to local fragmentation.
